Making the best of your skating experience goes beyond taking the usual precautionary methods or even having basic equipment like your skate. More than the safety measures there are to take and the equipment that you are used to either for just enjoying your skating sport or exercise or even for ensuring safety during the experience, there is a lot more equipment than even your skates and guards that you must have at hand to have the best skating experience. These come in handy as both skating accessories and protective skating gear.

As a skater, there are some parts of your body that you need to pay attention to when skating because the nature of the sport makes those parts vulnerable to accidents. These parts include your head, knees, wrist, elbows, etc.

The Necessary Equipment for Skating

This is a list of protective gear for skating that many skaters ignore or pay little attention to. Meanwhile, they are necessary not only to enhance a fun skating experience but also for adequate skater protection.

  • Wrist guards: While skating, it is almost impossible to avoid falling however, it is best if all precautions are taken towards falling safely. For this reason, I strongly recommend that you get wrist guards. Additionally, you need to ensure that you don’t struggle when falling. The gear would help you minimize the risk of sustaining any serious injury.
  • Wheels: Because more debris can get stuck in the wheels of your skates, you may be required to clean and replace them every one to three months. The wheels can also fail in a split second without warning. So, keep a spare set of good wheels in your skates backpack so you can easily replace them whenever you need or want to.
  • Helmet: Helmets for roller skating are to protect your head from an injury that results from a fall, which may happen anytime during your skating, especially if you are still a beginner. They are referred to as derby helmets by trainers and professionals of the different types of skating sport. Skaters can wear a helmet that covers the head fully, a skull cap that fits snugly under their chin or a bike helmet.
  • Mouth guard: Having a mouth guard on while skating can help you as a roller skater avoid dental injuries, tooth loss and jaw fractures. During falls, collisions and accidents like that, mouth guards are used to ensure protection of your teeth from hitting or coming into any contact with another skater's skate blade or even any of their body parts like the elbow. Roller skating demands that you have proper balance and coordination throughout the sport, so it is critical and necessary to practice safety precautions before skating.
  • Knee Pad: One of the parts of your body as a skater that is most exposed and vulnerable while you are out skating is your kneecap. When you are doing falls and jumps, which are quite common happenings in roller skating, the risk of getting an injury heightens critically. You should possess knee pads that are light in weight if you only roller skate for fun. Having a personal pad set will protect you more than simply having extra wheels and little else.
